The atrium

Everything turns around a single tree. The plan is a ring, open at its centre, so every room takes its light from the court and its view from the forest beyond.

  • FloorHoned concrete with radiant heating
  • LightConcealed and warm, with no fittings in view

How Cascade House was made

1 of 5

The plan

The plan is drawn to the land before it is drawn to the brief. Contours, trees, rock and the path of the sun are surveyed first, and the house is placed to keep all four.

  • SurveyTopography, trees and geology mapped
  • OrientationSun path and views studied
  • BriefRooms sequenced around the site

The set-out

The drawing is set out on the ground. Walls, columns and footings are staked to the plan, and the pine at the centre is fenced and kept.

  • Set-outFootings staked to within 5 mm
  • ProtectionRoot zones fenced before work starts
  • AccessOne haul route, replanted afterwards

The structure

Steel columns and a laminated timber ring go up first. The frame is surveyed and signed off before any wall closes it in.

  • RingLaminated oak beams, cut off site
  • CheckFrame surveyed before enclosure

The roof

A cast concrete ring is lifted onto the frame. It closes the house against the weather and leaves the court open to the sky.

The house

Landscape comes last. Rock and planting are set back where the work disturbed them, and the house settles into the ridge. The owners walk it with the team before handover.
